On July 1, Illinoisans will pay more at the pump to fill up their vehicles, as another gas tax hike begins along with other taxes. In total, Illinois will see $1.1 billion in tax hikes over the next year. They will support a record-high $53.1 billion budget. Dylan Sharkey is with the Illinois Policy Institute.
The gas tax increases to 47 cents per gallon for gasoline and 54 cents per gallon for diesel.
Also on July 1, video game taxes will increase by 1 percentage point, up to 35 percent, and the sports wagering tax will rise for sportsbook operators. The tax will move from a 15 percent flat rate to a progressive rate of up to 35 percent.
