An Illinois state legislator is hoping to address what they said is the growing issue of squatters taking over homes that are not theirs.
State Sen. Dave Syverson told the Senate Judiciary Committee the stories continue to stack up about people going on vacation, or going to a long-term care facility, only to come back home to find someone who has taken over their home.
Syverson said his Senate Bill 3658 would give police more authority to remove squatters.
Opponents of the bill included Sam Tuttle representing Legal Action Chicago. Tuttle said everyone needs housing and there is already an eviction law that can be used if necessary.
The measure advanced unanimously out of the Illinois Judiciary Committee Tuesday and awaits further action.
