The plan for storage facilities in the former Vandalia Kroger building will be forwarded on to the Planning Commission.
For the third straight meeting, the matter of storage facilities in the building was discussed by the Vandalia City Council. For the second straight meeting, developers Chase Alcorn and Bobby Brenneisen of Centralia were on hand for the meeting. They reiterated their plans for the 17,000 square foot building would be to spend about $850,000 to transform the building into 110 to 115 storage units in a climate controlled building. Alcorn did say there would be no fencing and no outdoor storage at the facility. Alderman Bret Brosman says he is in favor of the project.
But, Alderman Andy Lester is opposed to the project.
Aldermen Russ Stunkel and Ken Hubler also weighed in with their opinions on the matter.
City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says the matter needs to go to the Planning Commission because it’s a change to the city’s municipal code to allow the storage facilities in the downtown area. After a decision by the Planning Commission, it would come back to the City Council for final decision. Two Aldermen-Mike Hobler and Kenny Lewey-were absent from the meeting. The matter passed by a vote of 4 to 2 with Aldermen Brosman, Stunkel, Steve Barker and Bob Bowen voting yes and Aldermen Lester and Hubler voting no. So, the matter is now to go to the Planning Commission.
