St. Elmo-Brownstown had the hot hand, coming in on a three game win streak, complete with a big win in the Championship of their own holiday tournament, but the Eagles ran into a tough opponent on Tuesday and suffered their second loss of the season, 57-53, to Affton High School from St. Louis. The Cougars jumped out to a 17-13 lead over the Eagles in the first quarter, but SEB fought back in the second, outscoring Affton 16-11 to grab a slim 29-28 lead at halftime. Affton would very slightly outscore the Eagles 14-13 in the third quarter as things would be all tied up at 42-42 to start the fourth quarter. Affton would outscore SEB 15-11 in the final quarter though, as the Eagles would fall 57-53. SEB is now 10-2 on the season and will get right back into action on Thursday when they host Christ Our Lutheran for their final game of the month before taking a week and a half break and coming back to start the second half of their season on January 2.
Side Note: Affton High School boys basketball is coached by 1993 St. Elmo High School graduate Jay Laue who is well known for hitting the shot to force overtime against Staunton in the first semifinal game of the 1993 Vandalia Class A Sectional (there was only 2 classes at that time) before the Eagles lost 70-66 in overtime and Staunton would go on to win the Class A State Championship.
