The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is calling for parents and others to get involved after a string of recent arrests put a focus on human trafficking, prostitution and child porn activity. Sheriff Tom Dart recently reported six separate arrests over two weeks that included a human trafficking case involving a child. While it may bring comfort to think these problems don’t occur locally, Dart said there are no limits to the reach of such crimes and parents need to monitor their kids’ internet. Another step in this battle is the internet sites, which may turn their back on the issue, he said.
Additionally, Dart noted an astronomical increase in child pornography, from 3,000 internet images in 1998 to 33 million this past year.
Dart stressed the need for internet companies to adopt protocols to prevent these crimes.
