As Illinois Republicans look to avoid any tax increases during veto session, a measure that could lead to local tax increases to fund mental health boards has passed the Senate. Mental health boards in Illinois townships levy property taxes to fund local organizations and community mental health initiatives. A measure by state Sen. Ann Gillespie would allow townships to ask voters for increased taxes to continue supporting these boards. This goes against House Minority Leader Tony McCombie’s veto session priorities to not raise taxes.
State Sen. Craig Wilcox said Gillespie’s measure this is another money grab from the taxpayers.
The measure is now up for concurrence with the Illinois House. Both chambers return Nov. 7.
