The Vandalia City Council has approved an increase in water rates of 9.45% and an increase in sewer rates of 5%.
On Thursday, the Vandalia Water and Sewer Committee met to discuss the yearly audit of the water and sewer costs. Tricia Elam presented the findings to the City Council. According to city ordinance, the rates that would have taken effect with no action by the City Council would have been an increase of 18.56% for water rates and 10.16% in sewer rates, according to the numbers from the audit. But, Elam also prepares a sheet that is based on the increased costs but adjusted to remove the Governmental Accounting Standards Board add ons for pension. Elam says this figure is more realistic to the actual ordinance and this sheet called for an increase in water of 9.45% and sewer of 5%. The Committee approved recommending those figures to the full City Council.
Immediately after the committee meeting, the Vandalia City Council held a special meeting where the increases were approved. City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says based on the minimum bill for an in-town resident, this would be an increase of $1.99 in the water bill and 63 cents in the sewer bill. City Clerk Carla Huhn said for someone using 10,000 gallons of water it would be around a $7 increase.
