On Sunday, air quality in and around the St. Louis area as well as across west central/southwest Illinois is forecast to be unhealthy for elderly individuals, children, and those with heart/lung conditions due to smoke from the Canadian wildfires. It will begin to affect these areas as soon as this evening and is the main contributing factor for the poor AQI through Sunday. Impacts on air quality from the smoke may be shorter in duration in more southern locations and in close proximity to storms. The unique and widespread nature of this event prompted this NWS alert.
