A new incentive for ethanol based fuel may mean more earning power for Illinois corn producers. Thanks to support from state Sen. Patrick Joyce and state Rep. Cellina Villanueva, the legislature has passed a sales tax incentive to encourage retailers to sell gas with a higher ethanol blend. Russ Orrill, public policy manager for the Illinois Corn Growers Association, says it is a win for farmers.
The legislation gives gas stations a 10% sales tax exemption to sell gasoline with a higher blend of ethanol. A higher percentage of ethanol makes gas burn cleaner.
Illinois hopes this incentive will increase sales of the ethanol blend in Illinois.
