Two Vandalia homeowners have been dealing with sewage leaks in their basement over the past several months. And, a meeting was held on Tuesday at Vandalia City Hall to try and find solutions.
One of the homeowners has had the sewage leaks happen on 3 occasions over the past several months, with the last time just being this past Friday. Both homes are in close proximity to Fayette County Hospital and it is believed–although nothing confirmed–that there is some issue with the waste from the hospital potentially clogging the city’s sewer lines. City of Vandalia Public Works Director Marlin Filer says he has been checking the lines on a regular basis and they have cleaned out clogs at times and he says it’s not a problem on the city’s end. Filer says he and city’s engineer also checked the manhole and do not believe this is the city’s problem.
Representatives from Fayette County Hospital were on hand. One of their representatives says they have employed a local plumbing business to install adequate strainers to catch more lint going into their system. The representative says the hospital changed linen vendors in October, which would lead to a lot more lint in their system. They will also be ordering a Traptex system to catch much larger items such as wipes and other debris that could potentially be leading to the clog in the system.
It was also settled by all the groups in attendance to work together and keep in contact with all groups on what is found and if there are any other problems going forward. The representative from Fayette County Hospital said there could always be the potential for supply issues with the TrapTex system but he was hopeful within 3 weeks to have them. Mayor Rick Gottman said he believed setting a time by the end of June to check back up on this would be a good timeframe. Filer also said he would work to continue to check the sewer line on a regular basis.
