(Hamilton County, IL) — Two separate incidents at a southern Illinois coal mine resulted in one death and five injuries. Police say the first incident at Hamilton County Coal happened at around two Saturday morning when an underground roof fell while an employee was installing a supplemental roof support. Co-workers were able to reach the employee and tried to resuscitate him. He died after being taken to an area hospital. Later that evening, a fire broke out in a preparation plant at the mine. Five employees were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire caused significant damage to the plant. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
