St. Elmo Brownstown was a winner while Mulberry Grove and CHBC fell on the first night of the 62nd Annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on Tuesday night. In the first game of the evening, #8 seed Mulberry Grove fell to top-seeded Hillsboro 68-38. The Aces had trouble getting their offense going in the first half, putting just 5 points on the board across the first two quarters and trailing 30-5 at halftime. The Aces would come out in the third quarter and outscore the Hiltoppers 19-14 to cut their deficit to 44-24. However Hillsboro would outscore the Aces 24-14 in the fourth quarter for the 68-38 win. With the loss, Mulberry Grove is now 2-6 on the season and will drop into the consolation side of the bracket.
In the second game of the night, St. Elmo-Brownstown would get out to a 19-9 lead over the Bobcats in the first and lead 41-19 at halftime. CHBC would hold even with the Eagles in the third with each team scoring 13 points in the quarter and SEB would outscore the Bobcats 9-4 in the fourth quarter to close out the win. CHBC falls to 2-7 on the season and will move in the consolation side of the bracket where they will play Mulberry Grove at 6:15pm on Thursday. SEB improves to 6-3 on the season and will play in the first championship semifinal game against Hillsboro at 7:45pm on Thursday.
The tournament will continue on Wednesday night with #2 seed Cumberland taking on #7 seed Ramsey at 6:15pm and #3 Windsor/Stew-Stras facing #6 Patoka-Odin at 7:45pm.
