After lawmakers approved amendments to the SAFE-T Act that eliminates cash bail in Illinois, a lawsuit challenging the law will now be heard Dec. 20, just 11 days before the new law is to take effect. Democratic state Rep. Justin Slaughter explained one change state’s attorneys sought was what to do with defendants being held before cash bail is abolished Jan. 1.
Republican state Rep. Patrick Windhorst said there are legal hurdles.
The SAFE-T Act changes have yet to be sent to the governor’s desk. No cash bail goes into effect Jan. 1.
