A central Illinois group aiming to protect and restore rivers in the Prairie State says the state should better spend taxpayer resources on conservation, not ad campaigns. Illinois officials have announced a new name for the invasive fish formerly known as Asian carp. It’s now copi, short for copious. An ad campaign launched through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources last month includes the website choose copi dot com, with an Instagram and Facebook page. The Prairie Rivers Network said in a news release critical of the move “those who can’t do, rebrand.” Robert Hirschfeld questions if the $600,000 budget for the ad campaign is the best use of taxpayer money.
He said the Illinois Department of Natural Resources should better focus on reversing the degradation of Illinois rivers.
