A Vandalia Alderman brought up the idea of a Beer and Wine license for Wal-Mart in Vandalia on Monday, at least the idea of discussing it further in the future.
Towards the end of Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Alderman Russ Stunkel brought up the discussion point.
Alderman Bret Brosman asked about the expansion, if Wal-Mart was increasing their footprint, and it was pointed out they are remodeling. There were 3 Alderman absent from the meeting and none of the other 4 Aldermen in attendance commented.
The discussion of Wal-Mart being granted a liquor license has been discussed numerous times in the past, with the most recent discussion taking place in December of 2019 and January of 2020. At that time, the City of Vandalia’s Economic Development Committee held two public meetings to gather thoughts on the matter and was discussing the potential of expanding liquor licenses to other retail businesses, as only liquor stores can sell at this time in the City of Vandalia. At the second of those meetings, held in late January of 2020, Wal-Mart Store Manager Ken Wamble was in attendance and expressed an interest in them getting a license at that time and that having a liquor license would mean an increase in sales for them and would benefit the employees. No further discussion on the matter took place at Monday’s meeting, as the meeting was adjourned shortly after Stunkel’s comment.
