A new report ranking the tax climate in states places Illinois in the bottom half. The Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index compares state’s tax systems.
That is policy analyst Janelle Cammenga, who says Illinois ranked 36th in the country with a variety of tax categories hurting it’s ranking.
The top three states in this year’s ranking are Wyoming, South Dakota and Alaska. The bottom three are New Jersey, New York and California. The report says the states near the bottom have a number of afflictions in common: complex, nonneutral taxes with comparatively high rates.
