Senate Bill 536 has passed both houses of the Illinois General Assembly and could put an end to anonymous donations during judicial campaigns. The bill was originally brought forward by Sen. Melinda Bush and would prohibit a candidate for a judicial election from accepting donations from out-of-state lenders, and prohibit donations from groups not required by law to disclose contributions. Rep. Ryan Spain has been against the legislation calling it a violation of citizens’ rights.
State Rep. Katie Stuart argued that this legislation is not in any violation of rights.
If the bill goes to the Governors desk and is signed, the legislation would go into effect immediately.
