From the National Weather Service in St. Louis—
Atmospheric conditions this afternoon will be favorable for the development of funnel clouds. Such funnels can form in association with showers and/or thunderstorms, but may also occur in the absence of precipitation. Funnel clouds that develop in these atmospheric conditions rarely touch down as tornadoes, and are typically short-lived and weak if they do so. If you observe funnel clouds, please contact local law enforcement, and ask that they forward your report to the National Weather Service. Even though tornadoes rarely occur in these situations, it is advisable to remain inside a sturdy structure until the funnel clouds move away from your area.
