A nationwide school bus driver shortage is hitting Illinois just as school gets back in session. School districts are having to juggle routes and schedules to make sure kids get picked up. Sharon Desmoulon-Kherat, the superintendent of schools in Peoria, says it is bad all over with some districts telling upperclassmen they can’t give them a ride to school.
The Peoria school district has its own bus service, and Kherat says they are offering more money to attract drivers.
A First Student Bus Company spokesman says the industry was already facing a driver shortage before the pandemic hit last year.
