A new state law raises the amount people suing the state can get for damages. The cap in Illinois Court of Claims is now 2 million dollars, up from the previous 100 thousand dollars. State Representative Stephanie Kifowit supports the increase, which was prompted by the outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease that killed 14 residents of the Quincy Veterans Home.
The Governor had vetoed the bill, preferring the cap be set at 300 thousand dollars to bring Illinois in line with other states and recognizing the state’s fiscal problems. But, lawmakers overrode the veto.
