Republican Congressman John Shimkus was re-elected by a wide margin on Tuesday night. But, many of his Republican colleagues were not so fortunate. Overall, Shimkus took about 72% of the vote to defeat Democrat candidate Kevin Gaither. In Fayette County, Shimkus took 5456 votes, or 74.78%, in winning re-election for the 11th time and will now serve his 12th term in the U.S. House. But, Shimkus will now be part of the minority party as Democrats took enough seats to take the majority in the U.S. House.
