The state is launching a new testing program for self-driving cars. Governor Bruce Rauner signed an executive order creating “Autonomous Illinois,” an initiative designed to partner with businesses and researchers to safely test the technology. Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says it’s time to embrace the possibilities.
A driver will have to remain behind the wheel and be able to take control during testing. Blankenhorn says they are also looking at uses for “connected cars” that are part of a wireless network.
