(Cave In Rock, IL) — One sheriff in far southern Illinois wants to reopen an old state prison as a multi-county jail. Hardin County Sheriff Jerry Fricker yesterday proposed reopening the old Hardin County Work Camp to house prisoners from Hardin, Pope, and Gallatin counties. Fricker says he has only six beds at his jail, and Pope and Gallatin counties don’t have any. The state closed the work camp in 2015 because of budget cuts. Fricker says he doesn’t have a price tag for what the renovation would cost.
