(St. Louis, MO) — Matt Carpenter hit his 35th home run of the season as the Cardinals cruised past the Reds 12-5 in St. Louis. Carpenter’s two-run shot in the second inning put the Cards ahead for good. Paul DeJong added a three-run bomb and finished with five RBI in the winning effort. Patrick Wisdom also went deep and rookie starter Austin Gomber moved to 5-and-0 with the win. Scott Schebler had three hits, including a home run and two RBI for Cincinnati, which has dropped seven-of-eight. Homer Bailey suffered the loss and fell to 1-and-13 on the season.
(Philadelphia, PA) — Asdrubal Cabrera hit a walk-off solo homer in the 10th inning to lift the Phillies past the Cubs 2-1 in Philadelphia. Cesar Hernandez pulled the Phils even with a two-out RBI single in the sixth. The Phillies bullpen combined for five innings of scoreless relief with Pat Neshek earning the win. Philadelphia has won two straight and pulled within two games of Atlanta atop the NL East. Javy Baez gave Chicago a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the fifth inning. Steve Cishek took the loss. The Cubs have dropped two-of-three.
