The Vandalia City Council will hold a special council meeting tonight at 7:30pm at which they will decide whether or not to add a sales tax question on the November ballot. If approved, the ballot measure would center around removing the current 0.5% sales tax and replacing it with a 1% sales tax. The current extra 0.5% sales tax revenue goes directly to infrastructure in the city and the newly added 0.5% sales tax revenue would go directly to help cover police pension costs that the city comes up short on each year. Just this year, the city had to move over $50,000 from its General Fund to help cover pension costs. The special council meeting tonight at 7:30pm will be held in City Council chambers with a budget hearing scheduled prior to it at 7pm. Both of the meetings are open to the public.
