(Chicago, IL) — Matt Carpenter homered three times and added two doubles as the Cardinals crushed the Cubs 18-5 in Chicago. Carpenter drove in seven runs and tied an MLB-record with five extra-base hits in one game. Cubs slugger Kris Bryant is the only other player to record three homers and two doubles in a game, doing so in 2016. Jack Flaherty struck out nine over five innings to earn the win for St. Louis. Jon Lester got chased in the fourth to take the loss for the Cubs. Bryant and Willson Contreras homered in defeat. The five-game series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.
