A delay of traffic on Interstate 70 westbound led to a second accident, this one on I-70 eastbound. As law enforcement and emergency personnel were just starting to deal with a fatal accident, the second accident occurred at 3:19 pm at mile marker 64 on eastbound Interstate 70. Illinois State Police reports indicate that a vehicle driven by 24 year old Kathleen Roach Burford of Brownstown was traveling on Interstate 70 eastbound at mile marker 64 directly behind a vehicle driven by 23 year old Amber Wenthe of Watson. State Police reports say that all eastbound traffic has slowed due to a large multiple vehicle crash in the westbound lanes on I-70. As Wenthe began to slow, State Police reports say that Burford failed to reduce speed and rear ended Wenthe’s vehicle. State Police reports say upon impact, Burford’s vehicle went off the roadway to the right down the grassy ditch embankment. Wenthe’s vehicle then went off the roadway to the left into the grassy center median. State Police say that Burford was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. Both Burford and Wenthe were transported to Fayette County Hospital for treatment.
