The Illinois Senate passed a bill Wednesday requiring schools to teach LGBT history to students. The measure requires a unit on the contributions and role of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people. Sponsor, State Senator Heather Steans, says this is about more than a history lesson.
It will be up to schools to decide what grade level to introduce the material. The bill now moves to the Illinois House for consideration.
