The Vandalia Community Garden will receive two new benches as well as a new flag pole and flag as part of a project from a Vandalia High School student. Chandler Sasse presented a proposal to the Vandalia City Council at Monday night’s meeting as part of his work to become an Eagle Scout. The proposal from Sasse is to add two concrete pads with benches, five bird houses, a flag pole and a flag at the garden. Sasse plans to seek donations for the materials to do complete the project, purchasing the benches and building the birdhouses himself. Following Sasse’s presentation, Alderman Andy Lester asked if the city could make a donation to which Mayor Rick Gottman said the city could out of the general fund. Following a motion to approved Sasse to complete his Eagle Scout project, the council also approved a motion to make a donation by purchasing the two benches at a coast of $450 each for the project. The project is expected to be done by August.
