One individual was injured in what is being described as a potential gas explosion at a home in Shobonier on Sunday night. Vandalia Fire Chief Keith Meadows says they got the initial call for the fire at 1124 U.S. 51 in Shobonier at 7:40 pm, with that call being for what was believed to be a gas explosion and fire. Chief Meadows says the tenant at the home was believed to have opened the door, and that was when the explosion blew out the south end of the home. Meadows says the tenant, who has not been identified, was injured and was taken by Rural Med to Fayette County Hospital. His condition is not known at this time. Meadows says that an investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s office was on the scene Sunday night. Meadows says they were on the scene from the first call for about 1 1/2 hours and then were called back for a re-kindle at about 11:30 pm on Sunday night and were back on the scene for another 1 1/2 hours. Meadows says that Ameren, who supplies gas for the Shobonier area, were on the scene to investigate and that an investigator from the Commerce Commission was also investigating the matter.
