(Granite City, IL) — The head of the union that represents steelworkers who are heading back to work in the Metro East says President Trump’s tariff talk is just icing on the cake. Dan Simmons with the United Steelworkers Local 1889 told “The Belleville News Democrat” yesterday that market conditions improved enough to reopen the plant in Granite City. Simmons said talk of a 25-percent tariff on foreign steel is nice, but didn’t directly lead to the plant’s reopening. About 500 workers are set to return to one of the plant’s furnaces this month. The plant’s owner, the U.S. Steel Corporation, says managers have been pushing to reopen the Granite City facility for years.
