(Chicago, IL) — A former state representative is calling on the General Assembly to revisit the idea of banning the herbal supplement called kratom that’s been linked to at least eight deaths in Cook County. The supplement is made from a southeast Asian plant and reportedly mimics some of the effects of opioids, including euphoria and heightened energy. The drug is sold openly to adults in Chicago and hasn’t been banned by the FDA, even though it’s been linked to several dozen deaths across the country. The “Chicago Sun-Times” reports that former lawmaker Dennis Reboletti of Will County failed to get a ban passed in Illinois, though the drug is not legal in Wisconsin and Indiana.
