Several folks in the law enforcement arena in Fayette County will be assisting Effingham County, following the death of their coroner last week. Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey passed away suddenly this past week. Guffey was serving in his second term as Coroner and was also a business owner and in law enforcement in Effingham County. During Tuesday night’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Gottman talked about some of the assistance that is being offered. Guffey’s funeral will be held Friday and, during that time, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be helping out with calls in Effingham County. Gottman also mentioned that recently retired Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen is assisting the Coroner’s office in Effingham County at this time. Also, it was pointed out that Guffey’s burial will be held at a cemetery in the Ramsey area. Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray says the funeral procession will make it’s way west on Interstate 70 and should arrive at the Mile Marker 63 exit in Vandalia about 11:30 to 11:45 on Friday morning, and head north on U.S. Route 51 to the cemetery.
