A four vehicle accident on Interstate 70 in Effingham County leads to multiple injuries. The accident occurred at 4:45 pm on Tuesday evening at mile marker 87 on Interstate 70, which is 5 miles east of Altamont in front of the Westbound National Trail Rest Area. Illinois State Police reports indicate that a vehicle driven by 43 year old Brian C. Funches of Harvey, Illinois was stopped in traffic due to a lane closure ahead. And, a vehicle driven by 55 year old Audie D. Phillips of Cincinnati, Ohio was stopped behind the Funches vehicle. A vehicle driven by 30 year old Leigh An Slater of Altamont was slowing to stop behind the Phillips vehicle when her vehicle was rear ended by a vehicle driven by 33 year old James C. Call of Killen, Texas. After being struck, Slater’s vehicle went off the road and came to rest in the median. The Call vehicle continued on and rear ended the Phillips vehicle, which then pushed into the back of the Funches vehicle. State Police say the trailer on Phillips vehicle was compromised and the load was scattered in the westbound lanes and the median. Both westbound lanes were blocked and traffic was rerouted thru the rest area for nearly 4 hours. Call was airlifted from the scene by Air Evac to Carle Hospital in Champaign. Both Slater and Funches were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham.
