The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding that you don’t always need antibiotics when you are sick. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance says Public Health spokesperson Melaney Arnold. She notes that antibiotics cannot cure viral infections such as the common cold, flu and most sore throats and coughs.
The CDC estimates that antibiotics are used incorrectly or unnecessarily more than 50 percent of the time.
