(Decatur, IL) — Prosecutors in Decatur are moving ahead with adult charges against the 17-year-old accused of shooting and killing a two-year-old boy. Police say Zachary Pherigo told them he was playing ‘cops and robbers’ with the little boy with a stolen gun that he didn’t realize was loaded. Pherigo says he shot the boy once in the chest on Saturday. The Macon County States’ Attorney’s office yesterday filed first degree murder charges and a host of weapons charges again Pherigo. He’s facing a life sentence if convicted.
