A California man is being held in the Fayette County after an Illinois State Police trooper made a traffic stop and allegedly found 6 pounds of heroin. In a statement from the Illinois State Police, it states that on Sunday at about 8:10 in the morning, an Illinois State Police trooper initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 70, east of Vandalia on a gray Dodge Caravan for speeding. And, the ISP says, during the traffic stop approximately 6 pounds of heroin was allegedly discovered.
The driver, 37 year old Juan Contreras-Ibarra of Garden Grove, California was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Controlled Substance Trafficking and warned for speeding. Contreras-Ibarra remains in the Fayette County Jail after appearing in court on Tuesday. Contreras-Ibarra appeared, with an interpreter, in Fayette County Court. Bond was set at $100,000 and a public defender was appointed. His next court appearance is set for November 1st at 11 am.
