(Chicago, IL) — Governor Rauner is speaking his own mind after firing his communications staff over their response to a controversial editorial cartoon that made him look bad. The cartoon from the Illinois Policy Institute depicts a black Chicago child panhandling for school funds from a white man with a cigar whose pocket is filled with tax money. Governor Rauner blamed his fired staffers for the tepid initial response, but he reacted sharply when State Rep LaShawn Ford asked him to apologize. He said, “I will not apologize for something I had nothing to do with.” Rauner did say he sees how the cartoon could offend some people. Rauner in the past has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Illinois Policy Institute, which is where he hired those staffers he’s now fired.
