(Cincinnati, OH) — Lance Lynn tossed six innings of one-run ball to lead the way as the Cardinals clipped the Reds 4-1 in Cincinnati. Lynn picked up his 10th win and Trevor Rosenthal notched his eighth save. Lynn says he made a few mistakes that Cincy didn’t miss but he was pleased with his start otherwise.
Paul DeJong’s two-run homer in the third put the Redbirds in front for good. St. Louis improved to 54-and-56, four-and-a-half games out of first in the N.L. Central. Reds’ starter Luis Castillo surrendered four runs over six-and-a-third innings to take the loss. Joey Votto homered for Cincy in defeat.
(Chicago, IL) — The Cubs reeled off four runs in the first inning and held on to top the Nationals, 7-4, at Wrigley Field. Alex Avila capped the four-run first with a two-run homer. Wilson Contreras added a two-run shot of his own in the sixth. John Lackey tossed five frames of three-run ball to pick up the win. The Cubs ended a three-game slide and improved to 58-and-51. Cubs manager Joe Maddon says outfielder John Jay has contributed to the team in many ways.
Edwin Jackson struck out eight over five innings of four-run ball to get tagged with the loss for Washington. Bryce Harper went deep in the first for the Nats, who have lost five-of-eight. The rubber match is Sunday.
