(Springfield, IL) — A judge in Springfield says he can’t see a legitimate reason why a longtime teachers’ union lobbyist should collect a teachers’ pension. Judge Ryan Cadigan this week ruled against former lobbyist Steve Piccioli who is trying to keep his special pension. Piccioli is collecting a nearly 67-thousand-dollar a year pension after working just one day as a substitute teacher. He transferred the years he spent working for the teachers’ union into the more lucrative Teachers’ Retirement System under a 2007 law signed by then-Governor Rod Blagojevich. Illinois lawmakers say Piccioli shouldn’t collect the pension. Piccioli says if anyone is to blame it is the lawmakers who wrote the law.
