Velva (Niehaus) Schaal Fisher, 97, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 surrounded by her family at her home in Vandalia.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, July 14, 2017 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 2:00pm, prior to services at the church Friday. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, rural Shobonier. Memorials may be made to Fayette County Health Dept. Hospice or Holy Cross Lutheran Church Radio Ministry. Velva Augusta Niehaus was born March 22, 1920, in Farina, the daughter of Louis C. and Alma (Wachholz) Niehaus. She married Leonard Schaal June of 1941, he preceded in death November 1969. She later married Elden Fisher July of 2001, he survives her in Vandalia. Velva helped her husband on the family farm, after Leonard’s passing she picked up extra jobs ironing and doing housework for others, she worked as a respiratory therapist at Fayette County Hospital and years later she retired from Crane Packing in Vandalia. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by her husband Elden Fisher of Vandalia; sons Lloyd Schaal and wife Joan of St. Peter, Keith Schaal and wife Kathy of Vandalia, Gene Schaal and wife Phyllis of Shawnee, KS; daughter Sandra and husband Mike Gidcumb of Vandalia; brother Clarence Niehaus, sisters Melinda Perry, Iva Burgess, Fern Riechmann, and Jane Ballough; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard, brothers Leon and Orville Niehaus, and sister Wilma Ambuehl.
