Discussion concerning the issue of recycling and survey results about a $1.25 surcharge on City of Vandalia water bills for regular recycling at FAYCO and electronic recycling at the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District was the major point of discussion at Monday night’s Vandalia City Council meeting Monday night. Kim Taylor of FAYCO was present at the meeting and presented results of the survey saying 54% were in favor of the surcharge.
And Taylor says one clarification she wanted to make after reading comments from the 45% of those not in favor of the surcharge was that the charge is not coming because they are a failing business, its because of the cost of the service they have offered for free for 9 years.
Alderwoman Dorothy Crawford expressed her concern about one question she felt should have been on the survey asking if those who do currently use the service feel if people who do not use the recycling should have to pay for the service.
Another concern raised was the fact that the service is used by people outside of the city and people who are not City of Vandalia water customers and would not be subject to the surcharge if passed. And we will hear about that tomorrow on Newscenter.
