Though it was not a major topic of discussion, recycling was brought up for a few minutes at Monday night’s Vandalia City Council meeting. During the Standing Committee reports, alderman Kenneth Hubler read a prepared statement on his thoughts with a possible added $1.25 surcharge on Vandalia water customers bills to support the recycling at FAYCO and electronic recycling at the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District office. Hubler began by outlining how people taking advantage of recycling could help keep garbage costs down each year by minimizing the amount of garbage collected if residents would utilize the recycling.
Hubler also explained that without local electronic recycling which is a law, people would have to travel far distances to properly get rid of their electronics and would still have to pay a fee for the service. Residents were able to complete a survey that was made available through last week concerning their use and support or non-support of a possible $1.25 surcharge. Results of that survey are not yet available.
