An accident involved a dozen cars led to better to several injuries on Interstate 57 in Effingham County on Monday afternoon. The accident occurred at 12:22 pm on Monday on Interstate 57, 2 miles north of Edgewood. Illinois State Police reports say a grass fire started for unknown reasons in the median on I-57. And, due to wind direction the smoke from the fire created zero visibility for northbound traffic. State Police say a chain reaction accident involving 12 vehicles occurred within the dense smoke. And, State Police says that northbound traffic was closed for about 2 hours. In all there were 13 injuries, 6 drivers and 7 passengers were injures in the accident—and all those injured were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham by ambulance. The State Police says the accident remains under investigation.
