Although the rain is over for a while, the Kaskaskia River in Vandalia will continue to rise today and tonight. As of 9 pm last night, the river was at 21.5 feet—which is well over the river’s 18 foot flood stage. And, the river is now expected to crest at 27.8 feet on Saturday morning. When the river reaches that level we see flooding around the town branch in the City of Vandalia with water backing up and causing issues for homes and businesses in the 4th Street areas at St. Clair and Jefferson Streets. Also at that level, multiple areas on the river’s levee become overtopped—and that would pour more water into already saturated fields, streams and ditches. The river is expected to go down after that, but would not go below flood stage until Tuesday.
