Although the rains have stopped, the Kaskaskia River in Vandalia will continue to rise today. As of 9:30 pm last night, the Kaskaskia River in Vandalia was at 24.5 feet—that is better than 6 feet over the river’s 18 foot flood stage. And, the river is expected to continue to rise today and crest at nearly 28 feet by early Tuesday. At that level, there would be some major flooding. First off, homes near the town branch area in the City of Vandalia would be hit with flooding, U.S. Route 51, just south of Vandalia, would begin to be effected as the left bank levee just south of the highway is overtopped. The Diveley and Vandalia levees also begin to be overtopped, leading to more flooding in areas around the river. After reaching it’s crest on Tuesday morning, the river is expected to begin dropping pretty steadily and is now forecast to fall back below flood stage by Thursday.
