The jury trial date for a Vandalia man charged with 10 counts of possessing and reproducing child pornography is confirmed for April 24 at 8:30am. 36-year old Ryan J. Koontz appeared in Fayette County Court with attorney Shin Cho on Thursday for a scheduled pre-trial hearing in the matter after he rejected a plea agreement from the State and elected to move to jury trial. Both State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison and Assistant Attorney General Shannon O’Brien announced that the State was ready for trial and Cho announced the defense was ready as well. With just a few small motions to be addressed before trial, both parties elected to discuss the motions just prior to the jury selection on the first morning of trial. Both parties will also exchange expected jury instructions prior to the start of trial as well. Koontz is charged with 8 counts of possession of child pornography, which are Class 2 felonies and punishable by 3-7 years in prison, and 2 counts of reproducing or disseminating child pornography of a child reasonably known to be under 13 years of age, which are punishable by 6-30 years in prison.
