An accident on Monday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Fayette County led to traffic being re-routed off of the interstate and thru Vandalia—and the Illinois State Police had praise for the way local law enforcement handled the situation. The accident occurred just before 2 pm on Monday afternoon at milepost 62 on I-70 in Fayette County in heavy rain. The accident was a weather-related crash involving two vehicles—one a pickup pulling a trailer and the other a semi-trailer. There were no injuries from the crash. This led to traffic having to be diverted off of the interstate at the 61 exit, onto Veteran’s Avenue, and back onto the interstate at the 63 ramp going east. Trooper Ron Morecraft of the Illinois State Police thanked the Vandalia Police Department and Chief Jeff Ray, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Chris Smith, the I-DOT Vandalia garage and McDowell’s Towing. Trooper Morecraft said that in 24 years in law enforcement, there are very few times he has seen departments work so well together, and he thanked all the agencies for their quick response to what could have been a major incident. Instead, he says the crash scene was organized and easily cleared.
