Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Evans Horsthemke, 91, of Vandalia, passed away at 3:00pm, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at her home in Brookstone Estates, Vandalia, IL.
Services for Mrs. Horsthemke will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with Pastor Terry Westerfield officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00am, Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia. Burial will follow services at South Hill Cemetery, Vandalia. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, American Legion Auxiliary, or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Mary was born May 9, 1925 in Vera, IL the daughter of Charles H. and Willna H. (Lawler) Bryan. She married Paul E. Evans on September 23, 1944; he preceded in death October 26, 1988. She later married Walter “Slue” Horsthemke on March 22, 1991; he preceded in death on August 1, 2006.
Mary worked as the supervisor for the Fayette County School Cafeteria Program; she also was a cake decorator and caterer, cooking and serving at many political gatherings weddings, and birthday celebrations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Vandalia, American Legion Auxiliary, the 8 & 40, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mary enjoyed cards games, especially pinochle, she also volunteered countless hours over the years at the Vandalia American Legion.
She is survived by her sons Eldon Evans and wife Mary of Lilburn, GA and R. Kent Evans and wife Donna of Quincy, IL; son-in-law Ken Johnson of Sullivan, IL; Bryan Evans and wife Lisa, Angie and husband Jeff Smith, Sara Evans, Matt Evans, Monte Johnson and wife Jennifer, and Tracy Johnson-Smith; and great grandchildren Kelsey Evans, Caroline Evans, Spencer Johnson, Brett Johnson, Jacob Smith, Kelley Smith, Laney Smith, Stephen Smith, Chloe Smith, and Kelan Smith
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Paul Evans and Walter Horsthemke, daughter Linda Johnson, and brothers H. Max Bryan and Donald Bryan
