Area businesses and residents are being advised to be aware of a scam call that many folks in the community have been receiving. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reports there is a person calling and representing themselves as an employee of Ameren and threatening to shut off your electricity if you do not pay a set amount within one hour. When you advise that you are current on your payments, they then respond with there has been some confusion with crediting accounts and if you send the money they will get it straightened out and send your money back. You are given a number, but the Sheriff’s Office says it is a false telephone number. The Sheriff’s Office adds the information has been discussed with Ameren and they advise that is a scam and they say do not respond and do not send any money. Several businesses have reported receiving this scam call in the last few days.
